Navigating Food Around Thanksgiving

We all knew it was coming! The holiday that typically includes long travel days whether it is planes, trains, or automobiles, new settings, old family and friends who we may not have seen in a while, it can be stressful on our bodies to be in a new environment. It can be so easy to fall off the wagon so to speak and to retreat back to old patterns of eating around the holidays.

Some things I encourage you to do this Thanksgiving to stick to your habits and rituals that make you feel the very best:

  • Keep a routine. Whether it is daily movement, (long walks count!), journaling, or meditating, stick to what makes you feel good

  • Hydrate! Aim for three liters a day!

  • Fill up your plate and then don’t just refill because everyone is else.

  • Do not skip meals. Do not hold off on calories at breakfast and lunch because you have a huge dinner ahead of you. Instead, enjoy your usual breakfast and lunch so when it comes to dinner time you are not ravenous.

  • Approach dessert with mindfulness, choose one item that truly calls your name and satisfies you. From that place, enjoy it!

Remember at the end of the day Thanksgiving is just ONE day. In the grand scheme of things this is a tiny percentage of our life, so enjoy, be mindful of your food decisions, and after all, have some thanks and gratitude for your body and the food you are about to eat.
